Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Dolphin Hotel - geograph.org.uk - 1575217.jpg |
English: The Dolphin Hotel. In the heyday of Southampton as a spa town, during the late 18th and early 19th centuries The Dolphin Hotel was one of the places that people stayed. The plaque on the wall commemorates a visit by Jane Austen. It says "It is said that Jane celebrated her 18th birthday here in the ballroom of the Dolphin on 16th December 1793 with her brother Frank. Jane was staying with her cousins, the Butler-Harrisons, in St. Mary's Street. John Butler-Harrison was twice Mayor of Southampton. When she was living in Southampton in the winter of 1808/09, according to Jane's letters, she attended two other dances at the Dolphin ballroom, a beautiful bow-windowed room on the first floor." There is a picture of the Dolphin, showing the bow-windowed room, here 621098. The hotel is currently closed due to the recession, but is believed to have new owners. |
